Standardized Tests Tutoring
We help students lay a strong foundation of test-taking skills that will help them show what they know.
Not only do students make great score increases, but they also build core reading and math skills that help them in school.
What is a school district standardized test?
School districts use diagnostic assessments for a couple of reasons. Most commonly, students in grades three through eight take the tests two or three times a year to measure their academic progress. This includes assessments like the NWEA MAP, i-Ready, and Star 360.
These and other school district standardized tests, like the PSAT 8/9 and CTP5, are sometimes taken by eighth graders for high school admissions or to determine high school class placement.
Why would a student tutor for a school district standardized test?
Many students are well prepared through their schoolwork and don't need to do any additional preparation for these tests. However, some students tend to struggle with showing their knowledge on this type of assessment. This may be due to test anxiety, timing/pacing, or simply a lack of experience with standardized tests. Our tutoring combines skill building with practical strategies to familiarize students with the test, manage anxiety, and boost confidence.
Preparing for the test is especially important when it comes to high school class placement and competitive admissions. For example, we tutor students for class placement at New Trier High School and for admissions to Boston's exam high schools (Boston Latin Academy, Boston Latin School, and the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science).
When should my child start preparing for a school district standardized test?
It depends on when their real test date is, but we generally recommend students start tutoring three to four months prior to their real test date.
How do I get started with tutoring?
All students start by taking a pre-test. We then provide an in-depth score report, as well as a tutoring plan outlining how much tutoring we recommend. You can learn more about our practice test options here. You can also directly contact a tutoring director to talk about your child’s specific needs!
