High School Math Placement Test Prep

The high school math placement test tends to fly under the radar. But for students who want to take advanced math classes throughout high school (not just in ninth grade), it’s important that they score well on the test. Schools rely heavily on these scores to determine which ninth grade math class your child will take. Being appropriately placed in ninth grade matters since access to high level math classes in future grades depends on what class was taken freshman year. In other words, since math knowledge builds on itself, it can be difficult to get into an advanced math class sophomore year if you didn’t take an advanced math class freshman year.

It’s not unusual for students to feel challenged by a placement test. Sometimes it’s because they haven’t practiced certain kinds of problems in a while, other times it’s because they haven’t learned everything on the test yet. The way a question is asked can also trip students up—even when they know how to do the work. And we can’t forget word problems! It’s no wonder kids can get nervous about this test.

We have experience tutoring students for school specific placement tests as well as the PSAT 8/9. Schools typically administer their chosen assessment between March and May of 8th grade. We provide an optional algebra 1 diagnostic test so that you can get a sense for how your child might perform.
