August HSET Info: Getting Organized

School Information

  • Carve out some time to chat with your child about what you’re both looking for in a best-fit high school. The conversation will help you fine-tune your search, give your child some ownership, and provide quality time together. We’ve created a couple of worksheets for you here and here!
  • Expand your school search! Every year we hear from parents who were happily surprised by a school that didn’t initially appear on their radar. Attend open houses and parent coffees, talk with families who are currently part of a school community, and avoid making assumptions about schools.
  • Create calendar reminders for high school entrance related events like school visits, test dates, application deadlines, etc. Trust me, setting up a system now will make your life so much easier later! We’ve created two versions of an admissions process tracker: a spreadsheet and a doc.

Test Dates

  • CPS High School Admissions Test Date for Current CPS Students: Wednesday, October 11
  • CPS High School Admissions Test Dates for Non-CPS Students: Saturday, October 14; Sunday, October 15; Saturday, October 21 (Registration opens September 13)
  • Catholic HSPT Date: Saturday, December 2 (Check school websites for registration information)
  • ISEE and SSAT Dates: There are various dates and formats for these independent high school entrance tests. Give your director a call if you need help choosing the best option. Please note that seats for pencil/paper dates fill up very quickly, and some dates conflict with CPS and HSPT dates!

Shannon has a degree in marketing from Creighton University. After working in the business world for over five years, she decided to go back to school to get her master’s degree in elementary education from Quincy University. Learn more about her below!

My favorite book is… The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. This is an amazing book that made me want to travel and see more of the world.

My favorite subject in school was… history because I loved learning more about the world and how the past helped shape who we are today.

On a day off you’ll find me… hanging out with family and friends. In the summer, usually doing something fun outside.

What sets Nurturing Wisdom apart is… it’s team approach to tutoring as well as it’s individualized curriculum! Both the team approach and the curriculum make tutoring and learning more fun and efficient.

Camaryn graduated from the Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Prior to joining Nurturing Wisdom, she taught second, sixth, and seventh graders at public and private schools in Chicago and a suburb. Learn more about her below!

My favorite subject in middle school was…math, specifically algebra. I have always loved math and my middle school math teacher made me love it even more! I was excited to learn every day because of my teacher’s enthusiasm and positive attitude.

A tip I’d give to a student to make the most out of tutoring is…to be an advocate for yourself! Speak up when you need help. No one can read your mind, so when something is not working, and also when it is, let your tutor or parent know!

On a day off, you’ll find me…at a spin class, trying out a new restaurant, or sitting outside reading.

What sets Nurturing Wisdom apart is…our dedication to meeting each family’s needs. We care about supporting students and families and work hard to make sure everyone’s needs are being met throughout the entire tutoring process.

Sarah graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor’s degree in education and sociology, and she’s completed coursework in childhood literacy and museum studies. After nine years as a fifth grade teacher in Wauwatosa, Portland, and Chicago, Sarah initially joined NW as a tutor. Learn more about her below!

A tip I’d give to a student to make the most of tutoring would be… that you get out of it what you put into it. If you put in time and energy, and bring a positive attitude, you’ll achieve so much!

I loved Marquette University because… it put me on the path to teaching, introduced me to amazing, life-long friends, and made me fall in love with Milwaukee.

On a day off, you’ll find me… taking a long walk to a coffee shop, chatting with friends, or going on a bike ride and cooking while listening to my latest podcast obsession.

What sets Nurturing Wisdom apart is… that everyone on the team is a life-long learner at heart, and that we care about the whole student. Everyone is dedicated to getting to know families in order to find a great fit for students and tutors.
